ROLC 23th Anniversary’s Message

Haggai 2:2–5 — God’s Encouragement for a Faithful Small Church

On our anniversary, we turn to Haggai—a message originally given to God’s people who returned from exile weary, discouraged, and overwhelmed. After 70 years in Babylon, they came back with hope and began rebuilding the temple with joy. But soon opposition, lack of resources, and setbacks caused them to stop. They turned to their own homes while God’s house remained unfinished.

When God corrected them, they repented and resumed the work. Yet another wave of discouragement hit—this time from comparing their small efforts to the magnificent temple of Solomon. The new structure looked insignificant, and many wondered, “What’s the point?”

Into this situation, God spoke powerful words that are still life-giving today:

“Be strong… and work… For I am with you… My Spirit remains among you… Do not fear.” (Hag. 2:4–5)

These five truths form God’s encouragement to every faithful but sometimes tired church—including ROLC.

1. Be Strong — Strength for Every Role

God repeats “Be strong” three times: once to Zerubbabel the civil leader, once to Joshua the high priest, and once to all the people. Everyone needed courage because the task felt too small and too hard.

Today, God speaks the same way:

To elders and council: Be strong and lead with courage even when resources are few.

To pastors and cell leaders: Be strong in teaching and prayer, because spiritual leadership strengthens the whole church.

To the congregation: Be strong in serving faithfully—every act matters.

Strength doesn’t come from numbers or outward impressiveness, but from remembering who sends us and who stands with us.

2. And Work — Faithful Obedience, Not Impressive Results

God’s encouragement always leads to action: “Be strong… and work.”

He never asked the people for spectacular achievements—just faithful obedience, one stone, one day, one step at a time.

Before this, God had warned them: “You harvest little… you never have enough… your wages fall through holes.” Their disobedience drained them. But when they returned to the work, He promised His pleasure and blessing.

For us:

Keep preaching even if few listen. Keep discipling even if growth is slow. Keep praying even when answers seem delayed.

Faithfulness matters more than visibility. “Do not despise the day of small beginnings.”

3. For I Am With You — God’s Presence Is Our Strength

God anchors His command in a promise: “I am with you.”

The exiles lacked wealth and grandeur, but they had what mattered most: God Himself. His presence turns weak people into strong ones and small efforts into eternal work.

Small churches with God’s presence have everything they need.

4. My Spirit Remains — God Has Not Forgotten Us

God adds, “My Spirit remains among you.”

Even after exile and failure, He assures them His covenant love has not changed. The same Spirit who strengthened the remnant strengthens us today—guiding, empowering, and reminding us that we are not forgotten.

5. Do Not Fear — God Holds the Future

Finally, God says, “Do not fear.”

Fear focuses on what we lack. Faith focuses on who is with us.

God even promises that the future glory of the new temple will surpass the former—proof that small beginnings do not limit God’s plans.

Conclusion

Maybe we too have asked:

“Is our work too small to matter?” “Are we making a difference?” “Is God truly with us?”

Haggai gives a clear answer: Yes, it matters. Yes, God sees. Yes, God is with us.

ROLC may be small in size, but we have something far greater—God’s presence and His faithful Spirit. Every act of service, every prayer, every unseen effort counts in His kingdom. Nothing done for Him is wasted.

So let us continue to sow, serve, love, and build—not because it is easy, but because He is with us.

“Be strong… and work… for I am with you… My Spirit remains… Do not fear.”
