Past Messages - Open Sunday

“No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified” (1 Cor 9:27 )

At the recent Asian Games, the athletes did Singapore proud, winning 27 medals, 8 were gold, 7 silver and 12 bronze medals. As a nation, we came in 12th position. Every athlete competes with the dream of winning the prize.

The Christian life and ministry is likened to sports like running a race. “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever” says Paul in 1 Cor 9:25.

Rewards are important. Faithful believers will be rewarded at the Bema Seat of Christ (2 Cor 5:10 ). The apostle Peter says that “judgment begins with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the Gospel of God.” (1 Pet 4:17). A.W. Tozer says that all of us will have to give an account of our lives to the Lord “for what we have done and why we have done it.”

Although our salvation is secured in Christ, Jesus warns in the Sermon the Mount that “not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven” (Matt 7:21). In Eph 2:8-10, we are told that “we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works”, therefore we are to work out (not work for) our salvation with fear and trembling (Phil 2:12 ).

At the threshold of the New Year, it is appropriate to examine our lives to see what we have done for the Lord.

  • How have we expressed our love for the Lord, for His church and the community?
  • Have we been faithful stewards of the time, wealth and health He has given to us?
  • How many have we shared or won into His Kingdom?
  • Have our presence in His kingdom made a difference?
  • Has God been pleased with us in 2006?
Names of Jesus "Jehovah Shalom" The Lord My Peace

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Emmanuel…, Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isa. 7:14; 9:6).

The above passage tells us that real P.E.A.C.E. is found in God, in the Person of the Lord Jesus. His NAME speaks of P.E.A.C.E. Jesus is the “Prince of peace”, “Everlasting Father”, “Almighty God”, “Counsellor who is so wonderful” and “Emmanuel” the God who is always with us in all situations of life.

When we do not have peace, it shows that we are not in touch with the God of Peace (Phil 4:8-9, Rom 5:1). Sinners need to be reconciled with God through Jesus Christ and then they can become God’s ambassadors of peace to others.

For years, the focus of all the world problems is in the Middle-East and major wars have been fought over the city of Jerusalem. Ironically, Jerusalem means the City of Peace but for centuries, it has been the hotspot of hatred, conflicts and wars. Many Peace Treaties that have been signed are broken “even before the ink dries”. The truth is that there can be no peace in the world if the Prince of Peace is ignored and rejected both by the Jews and the Gentiles.

When the twin towers of New York were reduced to rubble on 11th September 2001 (911); the world has never been the same. Today, there is so much fear and insecurity. The wars in Afghanistan and in Iraq against terrorisms only serve to widen the spread of evil and terror everywhere. The Gulf wars, SARS, Tsunami, earthquakes, floods, mud flow and bombings in our neighboring nations bring terror nearer to Singapore. We are so vulnerable to any global disasters and terrorisms. Where can we flee to for safety? Where can we find peace?

There is only one safe Fortress for us to hide. Let us run to the God of Psalm 91. Let us dwell “in the shelter of the Most High” and find “rest in the shadow of the Almighty” and confess that the Lord is our “refuge”, our “fortress” our “God in whom we trust”. This God promises to keep us from the fowlers snare (Bird flu), from all other “deadly pestilence” and “fear the terror of night”. This is our God, the Jehovah-Shalom. We can have this Peace of God in the God of Peace through all seasons of life.

Names of Jesus "Jehovah Jireh" The Lord My Provider

“Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide.” (Gen 22:13-14)

Isaac was about 30 years old when Abraham offered him on Mt Moriah as a burnt sacrifice. The angel of the LORD (Jesus appearing in Theophany) appeared and called out “Abraham! Abraham! do not lay a hand on the boy”. In this one act, Abraham’s faith had reached the highest and touched the heart of God. It had taken him at least 30 years to grow his faith in the Almighty GOD. God is still waiting for our faith to mature. When will we pass that kind of test that God had set for Abraham?

Abraham’s faith in God was so strong that he “reasoned that God could raise the dead, and figuratively speaking, he did receive Isaac back from death” (Heb 11:19). He gave his best to God when he gave his only son, Isaac. It was in that context of total sacrifice that God revealed that He is  Jehovah-Jireh, the LORD who provides.

Often, we flippantly say that God is our Provider without realizing the context of this revelation. Abraham and Paul had experiential knowledge that God is “Jehovah-Jireh” (the Lord who provides) when they were severely tested (Gen 22:13-14, Phil 4:19). Abraham found God to be true and faithful when God intervened and spared Isaac but HE provided a ram in Isaac’s place as the complete sacrifice.

Isaac, a type of Christ, was spared the knife. But for Jesus, He had to bear our sins at Calvary’s cross and there was no eleventh hour intervention. Paul said that God “did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us” (Rom 8:32a). He was the sacrifice. Jehovah-Jireh gave Himself for us. If the best has been given, why do we need to fret? We are assured of His daily provision when we are obediently submitted to Him.

As we come to the end of 2006, we need to renew our faith and commitment to God. Abraham was willing to give up his Isaac. What is our ‘Isaac’? Can it be the treasures, time and gifts that He has blessed us with? What sacrifice is needed for us to know our Jehovah-Jireh? What is hindering us? Has not the Almighty said, “Test me….and see if I will throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour so much blessings that you will not have enough room for it?” Malachi 3:10

Names of Jesus "Jehovah Rohe" The Lord My Shepherd

“With shrieks, evil spirits came out of many, and many paralytics and cripples were healed. So they was great joy in that city” (Acts 8:7-8)

Those who went to the Indoor Stadium and Bethesda Cathedral from Monday to Thursday were amazed at witnessing the reality of the above verse in our very own city and modern days. There had never been such great demonstration of God’s Power in our city. The many demons that came in with the crowd were cast out of the individuals in the Mighty Name of the Lord. Loud shrieks of the demons were heard all over the stadium especially on the second night. Very accurate word of knowledge and prophecies were given to individuals, people were set free, many were instantly healed of diseases and those who came in wheel chairs and crutches were able to walk again. There were mass healings and deliverances. Hidden sins were exposed and sinners were rebuked in love not to sin anymore. What Jesus did in the four Gospels and what the Holy Spirit did through the Acts of the Apostles came alive in Singapore. Hallelujah! Praise the Mighty Name of Jesus!

Prophet T.B. Joshua clearly said, “I am not the healer. I know the Healer. His Name is Jesus”. He stressed the need to “go and sin no more” (John 8:11). He cautioned all who wanted salvation, healing and deliverance to be ready to “be ruled by the Word” in their daily living. We need to be repented of being a “conscious sinner” (one who deliberate sin against God and others). Only then will they experience true and lasting healing. He is a man who is so Word centered and Spirit filled.

All praises and glory to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Jesus is the same, yesterday, today and forever. JESUS is indeed the Mighty Healer and Deliverer. We who have witnessed the awesome demonstration of God’s power against the demons and diseases should desire to “know Christ and the power of His resurrection(Phil 3:10). Jesus promised us in John 14:12, “I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.  Do we believe this?  Do you believe that if (in reality) GOD can use a man of God like Prophet T. B. Joshua to perform miracles of healing and deliverance in HIS NAME, HE can use you and me?  T.B. Joshua said that God’s power is dormant in believers today. We need to stir up this gift in us to allow Him to use us heal and set others free for living for His Kingdom.

 Commands of Christ "Fear Not"

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV).

What transformed the coward Peter into the courageous Peter within a short period of time? Out of fear, he denied Jesus three times. Then a few days later, he became fearless even in the midst of threats. It is the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit in his life that caused the transformation. Peter was then able to pray; “Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness” (Acts 4:29). The early disciples were certainly filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. They did not possess “a spirit of fear but of power, of love and a sound mind”. Without the enabling power of the Holy Spirit, the Early Church would not be able to preach the Gospel fearlessly and sensibly.

Fear is not only an emotion. It is a spirit.  Since fear is demonic in nature, we ought to resist this demon whenever it surfaces in our lives. To do that, we need first to “submit” ourselves to God, then “resist the devil and he will flee” from us (James 4:7). When we humble ourselves before God, we will then have His grace to resist the enemy.

All of us have fears especially in the area of evangelism. We fear ridicule, rejection, failure, strangers or even friends. Fear seals our lips from sharing the Good News to family members and friends. Let us allow the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit to work through us. Let us redeem the remaining days of 2006 by praying for pre-believing relatives and friends and bringing them to hear the message of Christ both at the Indoor Stadium and at our year-end services. Do you want to see them saved, healed and set free by the power of the Holy Spirit? Let us not allow fear to paralyze us by not inviting them to hear the message of Salvation.

“After they prayed the place where the meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly” (Acts 4:31). We certainly need to be emboldened by the Holy Spirit to go out of the four walls of our church to prayer walk and saturate our community with this Gospel of Salvation. Don’t allow the devil of fear to trample us under his feet. Instead, Jesus has given us the authority and the power to trample our enemy under our feet and nothing will harm us (Luke 10:19).

Commands of Christ "Be Wise As Serpents"

“Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” Matthew 10:16

In Matthew 10, Jesus sent out the Twelve into the Mission Field. Did it sound like “Mission Impossible?” Jesus said, “I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves”.  A sheep is silly and docile but a wolf is cunning and wild. The outcome is certain yet Jesus further reminded them to “be wise as serpents and harmless as doves”.

Jesus was the “Lamb of God” that was sacrificed for the sins of mankind. We are to imitate Him – to be lambs in this hostile world. He wants us to be obedient and trusting even though we may be hated and persecuted for preaching the Good News.

Following Christ is costly. Though we face dangers, we are to be “wise as serpents and harmless as doves”. The serpent senses danger quickly and runs for safety. To be wise as serpent means to do everything possible to protect ourselves from impending dangers and deaths. When this is not possible, we are to be lambs that are willing to be led to the slaughter. The prophet Isaiah said of Jesus, “he was led like a lamb to the slaughter and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth” (Isaiah 53:7b). When our persecutors harm us, we are to be “harmless as doves”. Jesus did that for us. When mocked and ridiculed, He didn’t fight back but He suffered for us. Even when He had to die, He chose to die with forgiveness on His lips for all who insulted and ridiculed Him. On the Cross of Calvary, Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34 ).

Our Lord warned us of the dangers and the cost of following Him. He has set for us the example of being obedient unto death. He wants us to do likewise - to deny ourselves even to the point of death. When we are willing to die for our faith, we can then overcome the enemies of the Christian Faith. We win by dying. We have no fear of death in fulfilling the Great Commission. We need only one fear: the fear of God in laying down our lives at His altar of sacrifice. Are we able to join the many heroes of faith who will gladly lay down their lives for His Kingdom? Let’s be wise as serpents and harmless as doves in our service for God.

Jonah Part 2

“I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity” (Jonah 4:2b)

The book of Jonah reveals God’s grace to both His prophet, Jonah and to the Ninevites. It is about the “God who so loved the world”, regardless of race, color or language. Though Nineveh was a wicked city, God gave the inhabitants the opportunity to repent.

Chapter 1 – rebellion
Jonah forgot that the will of God is not an option, but an obligation and an opportunity. In running away from God, Jonah went down to Joppa (v3); Jonah had gone down into the innermost part of the vessel and lain down and fallen fast asleep (v5); Jonah was down in the stomach of the fish (v17) and Jonah sank down to the bottom of the sea mountains (2:6). When we disobey, it is always downward.

Chapter 2 – repentance
Jonah should have prayed for divine help in carrying out his mission. This would have spared him of the chastening and the need to cry out to God for deliverance. By fleeing for Tarshish, he went away from the Presence of God and by turning towards the temple; he showed repentance and returning into God’s Presence. We must always turn to God, face God not turn our back to God for repentance is the only way of life.

Chapter 3 – restoration
God is always gracious and concern for His worker as He is for the work. He could have sent another prophet to preach at Nineveh . Instead, God chose to work in and through Jonah. God always seeks to mature His servants. In this chapter, we see God’s grace in His love for sinners. He is “not willing that any should perish” (2 Peter 3:9). God’s grace is also seen in blessing the ministry of an imperfect servant by using his message to bring the city to repentance.

Chapter 4 – resentment
If God wanted only to save Nineveh , the book would have ended at chapter 3. But God chose to deal with His worker. Jonah was an angry man who was not fully yielded to God. God had to teach him compassion and love for another nation. The greatest hindrance to God’s work is often the worker himself. God always has to deal with His worker more than the work itself.

Jonah Part 1

“But the LORD provided a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside the fish three days and three nights. And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land” (Jonah 1:17 ; 2:10 ).

M.R. DeHaan said, “If a man caught a fish, it is no news, but if I fish caught a man, that is news”. Skeptics ridicule the book of Jonah. If one can deny the existence of Jonah, his death and his restoration back to life, then all other miracles in the Bible can be discarded. For Jonah’s life, death and restoration is a type of the life, death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. Thus, if Jesus’ resurrection can be denied and disproved, then Jonah’s story can also be discarded.

In the book of Jonah, the main character is not Jonah nor the fish but God. It is all about the Lord. He sent His servant Jonah to preach to the people of Nineveh (1:1;3:1). He “sent a great wind” (1:4). He “provided a great fish” ( 1:17 ). He “commanded the fish and it vomited Jonah onto dry land ( 2:10 ). He “provided a vine and made it grow” (4:6) and He “provided a worm which chewed the vine so that it withered” (4:7) and it is also the Lord “provided a scorching east wind” (4:8). If Almighty Creator-God is sovereign, “Who are you, O man, to talk back to God?” (Rom 9:20 ). “Since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse” (Rom 1:20).

Jesus Himself endorsed the authenticity and historicity of the book of Jonah by alluding to His own resurrection in Matt 12:40 – “For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be in the hearts of the earth.” This is sufficient to silence any skeptic. The Ninevites repented at Jonah’s preaching, should we not also repent at Jesus’ preaching?

This minor prophet Jonah has a major message that points to the future resurrection of the dead in Christ at the Lord’s glorious Return. No wonder the enemy viciously attacks calling it a myth. In this book, we see Jonah running from God, Jonah running back to God, Jonah running with God and Jonah running ahead of God. Are you a modern day Jonah? Are you running away from God? Or are you running away from the God-given assignments? Where can we run to if the earth is the Lord’s? The safest place is still in the Lord.

Encounter Sunday

Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners – of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life” (1 Tim 1:15-16)

Dr. Luke recorded Saul’s dramatic conversion thrice in Acts 9, 22 & 26. Saul was the worst enemy of the Early Church . His goal then was to arrest Christians and put them behind bars. The persecutor who was confronted by the Lord on the road to Damascus then became the preacher of the Good News of Jesus Christ. Saul became Paul. Once he lived to erase the name “Jesus”, later he lived to proclaim “Christ and Him crucified”. His life was so changed that he won many to the Lord and planted many churches in Asia Minor . Paul was thrown in and out of prison for sharing Christ and he suffered much for Christ because he knew whom he had believed (2 Timothy 1:12). If Christ could save him, “the worst of sinners”, there is hope for anyone who believes in Jesus.

Today, we have before us another man who had similar experiences to that of the apostle Paul. In his book, “Iron Man”, Neivelle Tan testifies of the transforming power of God. I read the book for the third time now and I praise God for His marvelous grace upon all who believe. In his late teens, Neivelle Tan was numbered amongst the most notorious gang fighters in the streets of Singapore in those days. His was a life of street crimes, violence and armed robberies; and he was in and out of Changi Prison. Neivelle met Jesus in Changi Maximum Security Prison and his life was turned around. He could have been a social ‘scum’ but today; he is a servant of the living God. In his own words. Neivelle said, “My story was a story of shame, of defeat, of failure but God came into that story and changed it into a story of glory, of victory and of success. It is His story, not mine. I was the villain; He was and is the Hero.” Today, Neivelle plants churches and travels far and wide to bring the Gospel resulting in the salvation of thousands of souls.

All throughout history, God is in the business of transforming lives! Has He touched you and changed you? Are you a living testimony of His wonderful saving grace? The apostle Paul and Reverend Neivelle Tan are great examples of those who have been grateful and obedient to God and in return they are used by God to snatch many out of the kingdom of darkness. What have you done for Christ who has saved you?

Commands of Christ "Be Reconciled"

“But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgmentTherefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift”. (Matt. 5:22-24)

C. Jones once said, “The best way in which we, the people of God, can reflect the nature of God here on earth is in the way we relate.” Counselors say that “almost every problem we have in life stems from a difficulty in relationships – our relationships with God, with others or with ourselves”.

Christianity is about reconciliation. If we have been reconciled to God through the Lord Jesus, all other relationships that are broken are reconcilable if we are willing and humble enough to surrender our “rights” to Jesus and others. The essence of reconciliation is giving up the right to be right. A good relationship exists when we are using our resources for the wellbeing of others.

Our Lord Jesus says that making peace with our brother or sister is our TOP priority. When the presence of the Holy Spirit is so strong, He will awaken our conscience to recall a broken relationship that needs reconciliation. Could it be that God wants us to reconcile with a brother, a sister, a spouse or a friend? Do we take heed to His promptings or do we willfully choose to disobey and ignore Him by ‘continuing with our worship’? If we do not make good our broken relationships, our gifts and sacrifices to God are not acceptable! God says, “Obedience is better than sacrifice”(1 Samuel 15:22 ). It is hypocrisy! It is honoring God with our lips but our hearts are far from Him.

The spirit of anger hinders reconciliation. Like Jonah, we think that we have the right to be angry with God, others and self. We are deceived into thinking that the anger in us needs to be expressed in shouting, cursing and even violence. Jesus says to be angry is as good as “murder”. Cain first murdered Abel in his heart before he murdered him with a weapon in his hand. Let’s us evict this demon (the destroyer of relationships) that has gained entry into our lives. Let us be the “first” to go and be reconciled to our brother. Then we can worship God with our gift. This then is true worship in the sight of God.

Commands of Christ "Honor God's Law"

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the Prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfil them” (Matt 5:17 ).

A Kingdom has three elements, a king, the law and the subjects. In God’s Kingdom, we have King Jesus, His Law (His Word) and His subjects are those of us who have entered into His Kingdom through faith in Jesus.

Jesus said that He did not come to abolish or do away with the Law, but by His life and ministry, He kept God’s commands perfectly. There are two ways to be totally righteous. One way is to keep all the commands perfectly without breaking anyone of them at anytime. The other way is to believe in Christ and trust in His finished work of salvation. This is the “righteousness of God” for all believers. Jesus is the only One who has ever lived and not sin. He has not committed any sin in thought, word or deed. He is indeed the sinless Lamb of God who died and took away the sin of the world.

Once we are saved by His grace, God wants us to love Him by keeping all His laws at all times. John Flavel, a Puritan father said, “The Law sends us to Christ to be redeemed and Christ sends us back to the Law to be regulated”. In order to be able to keep God’s laws, we must first be born in the spirit like Nicodemus (John 3). Only then can we have God’s Nature and His Ability in us to obey His laws through the power of the Helper who indwells all believers. True believers are not sinless but sin less as they allow the Holy Spirit to work through them to fulfil God’s requirements in us. We need the holy fear of God to align our lives to both the Living Word (Christ) and Written Word, the Holy Scriptures. Subjectively, the Holy Spirit who is the Spirit of Christ will then enable us to fulfil His Laws when we read, meditate and observe His words day and night (Psalm 1). The psalmist said, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against You. Praise be to You, O Lord; teach me your decrees.” (Psalm 119:11, 12)

Commands of Christ "Let Your Light Shine"

“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven” (Matt 5:13-16).

A Jewish Rabbi once said, “Light shines, not talks”. However, Christians talk but do not shine. No wonder, Peter urges the believing wife to shine so brightly in her home that her unbelieving spouse “may be won over without words” by her behavior  (1 Pet 3:1).

First, Jesus says, “you are the light of the world”. The plural pronoun “you” means all of us together must shine for Jesus in this dark world. Second, He says, “you are the light of the world”. That means that we must shine for Him now (at this present moment) and not “you will” (later). He is stating a reality that Christians have the nature of God in them and that nature is light. Just as Jesus says “I AM the Light of the world” (John 8:12 ) and God Himself is Light (1 John 1:5), Christians “are the light of the world”. Third, it implies that there is darkness everywhere and so we are positioned in different locations for one purpose – to be the lights to shine for Him. When we fulfill our purpose in this dark world, pre-believers will be attracted to the Light. When light comes in, darkness disappears. What an impact light makes on them. They will see the good deeds we do and will “praise” our Father in heaven.

Hey, lights!  Are you shining brightly for Jesus?  There is darkness everywhere – in your home, school, office and neighborhood. Do these places become “brighter” because we (the lights) are there? Shine for Jesus by our lives (our good testimonies) and by our lips (declare the Good News of Salvation). If you are not shining, begin to stay connected to the Source of Power, the Holy Spirit, and you will surely SHINE for JESUS everywhere! Praise be to God.

Children's Day

“Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it” (Pro 2:6). “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instructions of the Lord” (Eph: 4)

The words “son” and “daughter” are originate from a root word meaning “to build”. Every child is first a child of God before he is a child of his parents. All parents are entrusted with the awesome task of molding their children to the Divine design like the potter and the clay.

In the Bible and in church history, we have godly children like Moses, Samuel, Jesus and Timothy who have been raised by godly parents. Charles & John Wesley came from a big family. Their widow mother, Susannah, single-handedly raised up 19 children in the way of righteousness with the Bible as her only textbook. Her 16 Rules have certainly stood the test of time. They are:-

1. Eating between meals is not allowed. 2 A child must be in bed by 8 pm. 3. The child is required to take medicine without complaining. 4 Subdue self-will in a child and thus work together with God to save the child’s soul. 5. Teach a child to pray as soon as he can speak. 6. Require all to be still during Family Worship. 7. Give the child nothing that he/she cries for and only that which he/she asks for politely. 8. To prevent lying, punish no fault which is first confessed and repented of. 9 Never allow a sinful act to go unpunished. 10. Never punish a child twice for a single offense. 11. Commend and reward good behavior. 12. Any attempt to please, even if poorly performed should be commended. 13. Preserve property rights, even in smallest matters. 14. Strictly observe all promises. 15. Require no daughter to work before she can read well. 16. Teach the child to fear the rod/cane.

We urgently need parents like Susannah in this problematic world. God’s solution for this sinful world is a godly generation of children who will take, shape, sharpen and shake the world for the Kingdom of God . We need parents who are mighty in Spirit to teach and train children to love righteousness and to possess godly fear. Parents, are we positioning ourselves for God to use us to “go against the tide” by changing the destiny of our children for Christ?

Commands of Christ "Rejoice"

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice” (Philippians 4:4). “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

Everything about Jesus is supernatural. If we were to follow His commands, we need supernatural strength because it is impossible to obey His commandments in our human strength. Christianity is not being religious. It is a spiritual relationship with a Personal God who loves us and empowers us to fulfill our destiny in this world.

Take these commands “Rejoice in the Lord always” and “Be joyful always”. Is it possible to rejoice when we are in very difficult situations or when our loved one is having a sickness unto death? Yes, you can. Christians “live by faith and not by sight” (2 Cor 5:7) that is, the world of faith and the world of sight. When God commands us to rejoice, He is telling us to have an excitement in our spirits for what God is going to do through the trials He permits in our lives and circumstances.

Joy is one of the fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22) and when we live by faith, we are living in the Spirit. The Holy Spirit is then able to produce the fruit of Christlikeness (e.g. joy) in and through us even in the face of opposition, persecution and suffering.

In Phil 4:4, we are instructed 1. to rejoice (What). 2.  We are to rejoice in the Lord and not in our circumstances (Where). 3.  We are to rejoice in the Lord always (When).  That means, if we are always living in union and communion with the Lord, we will always be joyful in this hostile world. The Psalmist says, “Those who look to God are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame” (Psalm 34:5).

Joy and praise are twins. When we are joyful, we are grateful and thankful. These twin characteristics are sandwiched in prayer. “Praying continually” connects us with the Sovereign God who knows and cares about us. When we are certain that He is in charge, we can rest in Him and enjoy Him no matter what happens (Psalm 91). God is able to use all things to mature His children and He is able to deal with those who persecute His children. Therefore, rejoice!

Commands of Christ "Follow Me"

“Come Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19)

Jesus calls everyone in the world to follow Him because He has created us and has shed His blood for our sins. To follow Christ means to set aside our own goals and pleasures and to embrace the purposes for which God has created us. Following Jesus means being close enough to hear Him and to follow His guidance. No one can follow Jesus at a distance. Instead of “Following Me (Jesus)” we are “following men”. We follow man-made religions and philosophies and so we have lost the Way back to the Father (John 14:6). No wonder, we are weary and troubled. But the Lord Jesus still invites those who weary and burdened to “Come to Me….. and I will give you rest” (Matt 11:28).

The call to follow Jesus has two implications. The first is the call to Salvation, that is, to know Him personally. The second is to Discipleship, that is, to make disciples of others by teaching them all of God’s commandments. However, instead of being fishers of men, we have become keepers of the aquarium. Many of us do not want to pay the price of being a fisher of men. A fisherman has to get up early in the morning, endure the harsh weather and wait long hours to catch fish. This is the spirit Jesus wants of His followers.  It requires time, effort and great personal involvement to catch ‘fish’ and to draw them to Christ. It means a total restructuring of our priorities. Rather than putting our business first, we put the Lord’s kingdom first. Rather than seeking our own pleasures first, we look for ways to benefit others in order to bring them into the kingdom of God. We should not major even on building churches but on making disciples because these are fruits that will last for eternity.

Have we been fishers of men?  How many ‘fishes’ have we brought to the Lord since our salvation? Have we lost sight of our calling? Let’s repent individually and corporately for not fulfilling the Great Commission to win souls and make disciples for Him. Let’s begin to ‘fish’ for souls in our family, among our relatives, our workmates, neighbors and friends. Let’s win them before it is too late.

Commands of Christ "Repent"

"Then David said, “I have sinned against the LORD.” Nathan replied, “The LORD has taken away your sin. You are not going to die. But because by doing this you have made the enemies of the LORD show utter contempt, the son born to you will die.” (2 Sam 12: 13-14)

Of the three persons in the Bible (Balaam, Saul and David) who confessed, “I have sinned” (Num 22:34 ; 1 Sam 15:24 , 30 & 2 Sam 12:13 ), only David's confession was genuine (Psalms 32 & 51). Using this as a guide, can we deduce that one out of three persons, one truly repents or one out of the three times, our repentance is genuine before God? Do we find it hard to admit, “I am wrong” and “Please forgive me”.

The longer I live, the more I see my need to ask God and those closest to me for forgiveness. When Jesus taught, “Give us today our daily bread” he also taught, “Forgive us our debts” (Matt 6:11 , 12). As often as we ask/thank God for food, we need to ask for forgiveness of our sins. We need daily food to keep us strong and healthy, so we also need forgiveness and cleansing to keep our souls and spirit strong to resist the Enemy.

After David committed the double heinous sins of adultery and murder, he was tormented by guilt for months. He said, “when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer” (Ps 32:3-4).

God engineered the perfect timing to confront His erring servant. Through Prophet Nathan's rebuke (“You are the man!” 2 Sam 12:7), David instantly repented " I have sinned against the LORD " . All sins are against “the LORD”. The earthly king David admitted his sins against the KING of kings. Nathan saw his contrite heart and he declared “The Lord has taken your sin away”. The wages of sin is death and although David deserved death, he was spared from it. But someone had to die in his place. The innocent has to take the place and pay the price for sin. In this case, it was the child that was to be born!

As for us, it is none other than the innocent Lamb of God that died for our sins. The price of sin is death. It is costly to sin. Let's repent and sin no more!

Teacher's Day

Thank You Teachers in our Kidz Church and the Youth Ministry .

1st September is Teachers' Day in Singapore . I take this opportunity to thank all our teachers who have given so much time and money to sow into the lives of our children/youths at ROLC.

According to 1 Cor 12:29 and Acts 13:1, the office of the teachers is placed immediately below that of the apostles and prophets. The work of the apostles and prophets may be global but the work of the teachers is to nurture and build up the believers in the local congregation.

The Jews highly esteemed their teachers and called them “Rabbis”. Parents bring their children into the world but the Rabbis prepare the children for the life to come. Interestingly, if the parent and the Rabbi were captured by an enemy, he must first redeem his Rabbi before his parent.

Teachers are influencers. James warns us not to disregard the importance of the role of a teacher (James 3:1). They will be judged more strictly because their words and examples have a direct impact upon the lives of the students. The teacher uses his/her tongue to teach God's Word, to bless and not to curse, to give life and not death (Pro 18:21 ). What the teacher says can influence the students for life.

However, teachers are not to replace the parents. The job of a teacher is to reinforce what is first taught in the home. God holds the fathers primarily responsible for teaching their children the commandments of the Lord (Deut 6:1-9). Parents are to “love the LORD your God with all their heart, soul and strength” and to “impress them upon the children” in all situations of life. This awesome responsibility must not be abdicated and handed over to the church or school.

As a church, we seek to compliment the parents in raising sons and daughters for the Kingdom. Praise God, He empowers and anoints parents and teachers to fulfill this awesome task (1 John 2:20 ).

Men Who Encounter Jesus

“They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common” Acts 2:42-43.

The saying “pay the price” if we want the best. Similarly, we need to “pay the price” if we want the best from God and see break-through in our lives and church. We need to enforce spiritual disciplines on ourselves if we want to experience the kind of life and ministries of the Early Church . The believers were devoted to the Word, Fellowship, Worship and Prayer. In other words, they were devoted to Christ and the Church. See how they loved one another that they shared all they had with one another. Everything was done “in love” (1 Cor 16:14 ). In response to their devotion, “the Lord added to their number daily those who were saved” (Acts 2:47 ).

Do we want to see more souls saved daily and weekly in our homes and Oikos? As we seek to build ourselves up in the Word, Fellowship, Worship and Prayer, we will inevitably win people to the Lord. Evangelism is a by-product of doing the right things.

Here are 10 daily disciplines for “supernatural growth”. Try it for 3 weeks and you will see the results and rewards in your personal lives.

Exposition of 1 Corinthians Chapter 16

“My love to all of you in Christ Jesus. Amen” (1 Corinthians 16:24 )

The apostle Paul dealt with 11 issues in the Book of First Corinthians. They are divisions (ch 1), immorality (ch 5), lawsuits (ch 6), abuse of freedom (ch 6), marriage, remarriage and singlehood (ch 7), food offered to idols (ch 8), headship (ch 11), Lord's Supper (ch 11), spiritual gifts (ch 12-14), resurrection (ch15) and money matters (ch 16).

In dealing with the above issues, Paul revealed his pastoral heart. At times, he seemed very harsh when he used words like, “hand this man over to Satan” or “expel the wicked man from among you” (ch 5:5; 13). However, his heart of love was revealed in Chapter 13. Who could write such a great chapter on Love if he himself was unloving? He loved them dearly. In 2 Corinthians chapter 9, we see the great extent of suffering Paul was willing to bear for the sake of the believers in Corinth . He said, “five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, and I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, …from bandits, …from my own countrymen, …from Gentiles; …in the city, …in the country, ..at sea and from false brothers. I have labored and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked. Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure for all the churches” (2 Cor 9:24 -28).

When Paul wrote “my love to all of you in Christ Jesus” he certainly meant it. He paid the price of costly love. He could love like Christ because he drew that ability to love and suffer from the Resurrection Power. This power is also available to all who are in Christ. Thus, we all can “imitate Paul who imitates Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1). Today, Jesus is saying to all of us, “Come, follow ME and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19 ). Obeying such a command means being willing to love and suffer for others like Paul. We will be able to bring souls into His Kingdom and disciple them in our Oikos. May His Resurrection power enable us to patiently love one another in our Oikos to bring one another to maturity in Christ.

Exposition of 1 Corinthians Chapter 15

“Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain” (1 Cor 15:58).

1 Corinthians 15 is the classic chapter on resurrection. Christianity stands or falls on the historical reality of Christ's resurrection. It begins and ends with this word “stand”. If we “stand” in the full Gospel (verses 3-4) we will be able to “stand firm” to the end and allow nothing to move us away from the truth. Instead we will always give ourselves to the work of the Lord for we “know that our labor in the Lord is not in vain”.

The Corinthians were like the Sadducees (Matthew 22:23 ; Acts 23:8). They questioned the truth of the resurrection. Some of them said, “there is no resurrection of the dead” (verse 12). If what they say was true, then Christ (the Head) was not risen. And if Christ was not risen, then there would be no resurrection of the Church (the Body). If the Head (Christ) is indeed risen from the dead, then the Body (Church) will one day be raptured. This is our glorious Blessed Hope at the Second Coming of the Lord.

We owe it to ourselves to find out the truth of the resurrection. Once we are convinced that resurrection is a reality, we owe it to ourselves to find out what's going to happen to us when it does occur. What we will be after the resurrection depends on what we are before we die. It is wisdom to start preparing for the day when we will experience that reality. We should then be steadfast and immovable whatever the future holds for us. Our faith in the Lord and His Word gives us aspiration to abound in the work of the Lord knowing that we will be found pleasing to the Lord when He comes again to take us unto Himself.

While we await our resurrection, He has given us His resurrection power to enable us to live victoriously in this world. We will be moved by the Power of His Resurrection to be “witnesses in Jerusalem , Judea , Samaria and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). Then we will wait with eager expectation at the Bema Seat of Christ knowing that our labor for Him will certainly be rewarded.

Exposition of 1 Corinthians Chapter 14

“When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church.” (1Cor 14:26 ).

The Church is commonly referred to as the Body of Christ and the Bride of Christ. But in 1 Corinthians 14, the church is referred to as a “building”. This explains why the word “edify” or “edification” are used six times in this chapter.

To ‘edify' in Greek is ‘oikodomeo'. It means to mutually build up one another (in the context of Oikos/house group). This clearly explains the function of an Oikos group: to edify/build one another up in the faith. In the Early Church, about 10 to 12 believers worshipped in a house church as most of the houses were small. Only the very rich had bigger houses.

We can visualize what an Oikos meeting was like in those days. Each member was a minister. One had a psalm, one a teaching, one a tongue and one an interpretation. But all had one goal – to edify another. All these manifestations of the gifts of the Holy Spirit were for the Body-Life Ministry. They often experienced the visitation of the Holy Spirit. There is no wonder why they could declare “God is certainly among you” (1 Cor 14:25 ). If we model our Oikos meetings after the Early Church , we should be building one another up and we would certainly experience the awesome presence of the Holy Spirit. This speaks of the fact that we should all come prepared to minister and be ministered in our Oikos meetings.

The Church today must grow big and small simultaneously. We should be big in our Celebration on the Lord's Day when we gather for worship. At the same time, we should be small in our Oikos groups. When an Oikos group gets big, we must divide in order to multiply. Celebration must be vibrant and inspiring and the Oikos must be fervent in evangelism and pastoral care.

ROLC members, we must not neglect the assembling of ourselves in our weekly Oikos gathering and Celebration (Sunday Worship). We need one another for mutual help/encouragement in these last days. This world offers us no lasting hope. We need to encourage one another while we await the Lord's Return. Jesus says, “In Me you may have peace. In the world, you have tribulations, but take courage, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33 ).

Men Who Encounter God

“They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them” (Acts 1:14; 2:4)

The Early Church was birthed by the Sprit in Acts 2 after a prayer marathon (10 days). Have you heard of such a long prayer meeting? The result….they were filled with tremendous power. Acts 4:31 “After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Sprit and spoke the word of God boldly”. Do we want such power? Then, pay the price or rather ‘pray' the price.

Prayers strengthened the faith of the Early Church believers. Instead of being shaken by persecutions, the place was shaken and they “spoke the word of God boldly”. They stood their ground and the ground gave way. They were like Daniel - nothing could stop them from praying. When it comes to intercession, nothing can outlaw prayer. No discussion, no debate, no authority can stop Daniel from talking to God, three times a day. He would be on his knees, praying and giving thanks as his custom was. Prayer will not go underground for Daniel. Prayer was his lifestyle. Prayer was his life-shaper. Let us imitate the faith and practice of Daniel and the Early Church .

ROLC will spend a ‘day' in prayer for the nation, for the churches and the world. We will be a “corporate man” standing in the gap – praying, crying and repenting on 5 th August. 2 Chronicles 7:14 – “If my people (ROLC), who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and forgive their sin and will heal their land”. We do our part to “humble - pray - seek - turn” from our wicked ways. God will then do His part to “hear - forgive - heal”. We will unite our hearts to seek His Face from Saturday at noon till Sunday at noon. We will pursue the Heart of God and experience the power of prevailing prayers against the “gates of hell”. We will keep the incense burning!

Exposition of 1 Corinthians Chapter 13

“If I could speak in any language in heaven or on earth but didn't love others, I would only be making meaningless noise like a loud or a clanging cymbal. If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I knew all the mysteries of the future and knew everything about everything, but didn't love others, what good would I be? And if I had the gift of faith so that I could speak to a mountain and make it move, without love I would be no good to anybody. If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it, but if I didn't love others, I would be of no value whatsoever” (1 Cor 13:1-3 NLT).

Jonathan Smith said, “We have enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one another”. Perhaps, he has been reminded of the above passage. Could these verses be written differently? “ If I could speak in any language in heaven or on earth and have love …If I had the gift of prophecy and have love. . .I would be a great blessing to many.” When our words are balanced by deeds and our talk is matched by our walk, our testimony would be effective and many would be attracted to our Lord.

We need the gifts and the grace, the abilities and the attributes, the actions and the attitudes to be Christlike. The apostle Paul who wrote this great chapter on love lived an exemplary life in the power and manifestations of the Holy Spirit. Love motivated Paul to make the three missionary journeys, suffered persecution, shipwrecks, imprisonment and hunger so that he might preach Christ to every land. He said “Christ's love compels us” (2 Cor 5:14a). This love that Paul wrote about was sealed with his own blood.

The Triune God is a God of love in action. God the Father so loved us He sent His Son to us (1 John 4:19 ). God the Son so loved us that He gave His life for us. God the Holy Spirit so loved us that He poured God's love into our hearts (Rom 5:5). For this very reason, we are commanded to love one another (John 13:34 -35).

Read and pray through 1 Corinthians 13 and try to replace the word ‘love' with your own name. ___ is patient, ___ is kind, ___ does not envy, ___does not boast, etc. How does that sound? If you replace the word ‘love' with Christ, it will sound perfect. Christ is patient, Christ is kind, etc. I pray that we will live and love like Christ in our own family and in our church and in our workplace. May the Holy Spirit enable us to fulfill the great commandment to love one another (John 13:34 -35).

Exposition of 1 Corinthians Chapter 12

“A spiritual gift is given to each of us as a means of helping the entire church”. “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good” (1 Cor 12:7 NLT/NIV).

1 Corinthians 12-14 must be read and studied as a whole in order to be balanced in teaching and practice. We are reminded that all the gifts being manifested and practiced must be governed by love. Interestingly, the Love chapter (chapter13) is situated between the chapters on spiritual gifts (Ch.12 & 14). When a gift is governed by love, others will be blessed and God is glorified.

The human body is the most perfect illustration of diversity in unity. Each member of the body is important and indispensable. Paul used this illustration to show that no believer is more superior or inferior than another. God gives gifts to all His children so that they can use their gifts to build up His Church. We should not bury our gifts but we must be good stewards of the gifts that He has entrusted to us. No gift is better that the another and no one is to use his/her gifts to show that he/she is better than others. The above verse reminds us that our gifts should be used to help the church.

The Triune God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) is involved in the Life and Ministry of the Church. The NLT Bible says, “there are different kinds of spiritual gifts , but it is the same Holy Spirit who is the source of them all; “there are different kinds of service in the church, but it is the same Lord ” and “there are different ways God works in our lives, but it is the same God who does the work through all of us” (12:4-6). The Oneness of the Godhead is fully involved in our salvation, service and sanctification. When the diversity of spiritual gifts is exercised by every member of the church, the church will then reflect the Unity of the Godhead.

To be a high impact Church, we must excel in all our spiritual gifts. We cannot afford to be ignorant about our spiritual gifts (12:1).
The New Living Translation writes, “I must correct your misunderstandings about them”. Ignorance or lack of knowledge is dangerous because they lead to destruction and death (Hosea 4:6a). This is a serious warning for us. We must not be ignorant about the Person, gifts and the manifestations of the Holy Spirit. Each of us needs to grow and flow in our anointing and exercise our gifts in harmony and humility with other members for the common good so that the Church can be built up to bring glory to His Holy Name.

Exposition of 1 Corinthians Chapter 11

"Be Imitators of me, as I also am of Christ" (1 Corinthians 11:1).

The verse serves as the conclusion for chapters 1-10. Paul emphatically tells the believers to “follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ” . What a bold statement! Was Paul thinking too highly of himself? No! We should do likewise if we have been imitators of Christ.

At one cell group, a few years ago, I told a 5-yr-old boy, “I want to be like you”. He looked at me and said, “I also want to be like you”. I shed a tear. “Am I worthy of being imitated? Am I like Paul or Christ?” I should be for I know that “we have been made a spectacle to the whole universe, to angels and as well as to men” 1 Cor. 4: 9.

Christ has set the example for us in His earthly life and God was pleased with Him. From birth to burial, He lived to fulfil the perfect Will of His Father. He had to learn obedience even through sufferings. He was focused and faithful to the end, even death on the Cross. Following Christ may mean having to suffer for Him. Jesus says to every member of His Body (the Church), “if anyone wants to come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me” (Luke 9:23).

During the Trial of Jesus, Peter said, “I don't know this man (Jesus)” Mark 15:71. Peter denied Christ to save himself. To deny self is the reverse. It is choosing not to know oneself and willing to risk oneself for sake of knowing Christ. Like Paul and the many believers who have suffered for Christ, we must be “willing to consider everything as loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus, lose all things and consider them as rubbish in order that we might gain Christ (Phil. 3:8).

Do we really know Him experientially? Have we been following Christ? What is that one step we must take to follow Christ? Are we like Him in our behaviour? Are we sharing Christ with our relatives and friends? Are we willing to be ‘persecuted' or “ridiculed” for Christ's sake?

July 2 Men Who Encounter Jesus

“May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it” (1 Thess 5:23 -24)

Man is created in God's Image to be a “tripartite being” like God Himself (a Triune God). “The Lord God formed the man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living soul (Gen 2:7 KJV). Man's body is of dust, his breath is the spirit and his real self is a soul. The body is his house, the spirit is the part that is able connect with the ‘spirit world' (either the Spiritual world of God or the world of the demonic).

When God sees man, He first sees the heart (the inner man), then the soul and finally the body (1 Thess 5:23 ). Man reverses the order by placing emphasis on the body, then the soul and finally the spirit. God wants us to be blameless. He starts working on us from within. We are made to be strong in the spirit so that our spirit can control the soul and influence the body. Thus, we must feed our human ‘spirit' and allow our spirit to control our ‘soul' and then the 'body'. If this is consistently maintained, we will be mighty in spirit. Failure to take care of our ‘spirit-man” but allowing our soul and our flesh to control us can lead to death like the Israelites who died prematurely in the desert. (1 Corinthians 10:6-10)

When we are born-again, the Holy Spirit indwells us for the very purpose of enabling our spirit to control our soul (our mind, emotions and will) and to make our body align with God's Purpose to fulfill the destiny He has for us. God is Awesome and His thoughts are higher than ours; so when our spirit-man is in harmony with the Spirit of the Living God, we will live on a higher plane. It is frustrating for the Holy Spirit to remain passive in us. He wants His Awesome Presence and Power to be manifested through us. Are we allowing Him to sanctify us through prayer, worship, meditation of His Word and in the fellowship of His saints so that we are kept blameless till He returns? He is faithful to do it, but are we faithful?

June 25 Exposition of 1 Corinthians Chapter 10

God's goodness.
We asked God for 80 campers and He gave us 88 (same as last year). This camp was awesome. The youths experienced the power of the Holy Spirit when they witnessed the lengthening of their hands and legs and the healing of their ‘inner man' through the ministry of Irene East. Most of the adults received word of knowledge and prophetic word/prayer over their lives from the Holy Spirit through David Wong. The children were well ministered through the interesting and devotional program planned by Rachael Ong. The acronym
C.A.M.P . (Christ's Anointed Manifested Presence) sums up our Family Camp at Sofitel Palm Resort. It was awesome when the Holy Spirit came to touch, heal, reveal and speak the Rhema Word to us. Like Samuel, we need to respond, “Speak Lord, for thy servant listens” (1 Samuel 3:10 )

Why we need to have camps
In the OT, whenever God wants to speak to His people, He spoke through His servant e.g. Moses. The Israelites camped around the Tent of Meeting (Lev 1:1; Num 2:2) to receive the Rhema word of God through Moses. At the Tent of Meeting, God spoke to them through their Anointed leader, Moses. When the pillar of cloud and fire did not move, they were to stay in the camp to receive God's word of instruction. The church camp is similar to this. Church Camp is the time when the local church come together to listen intently to God's instruction and direction for our individual lives and the church as a whole.

What God spoke to us at this Family camp?
The theme chosen was, “Discover Your Destiny”. David Wong shared 5 messages concerning our “Destiny in the world, Destiny in the Church, Destiny in the Community, and Your Eternal Destiny & Destiny in the Marketplace”. They were timely words for us. As a council, we have been praying that evangelism is our way of life. He reminded us that our job (our first responsibility) is to win the world for Christ. We live for this highest purpose . The world can be won through the process of multiplication in a short time if every believer fulfills his/her destiny.

Our Response to God's Rhema Word.
As pastor, I am clear about this Rhema Word. We must take ownership of our field (within 2-3 km of our Mission Home). We must penetrate the 20 homes in this locality as well as the flats in Ponggol estate. We need to be more proactive and active in Evangelism in order to win our neighbors, loved ones and friends to His Kingdom. We need to snatch people from heading for lost eternity. The more we are engaged in winning souls, the more souls He will entrust to us to bring them into His Kingdom by the power of the Holy Spirit.

June 18 Exposition of 1 Corinthians Chapter 9

“Everything is permissible” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible” but not everything is constructive. Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others . (1 Corinthians 10:23-24).

1 Corinthians chapters 8-10 talks about liberty/freedom. In chapter 8, Paul deals with Christian liberty in the ‘grey' areas. In chapter 9, Paul uses himself as an example of showing how liberty affects others and in chapter 10; Paul shows how the nation of Israel fails in handling liberty.

True freedom is not doing what we like but doing what is right. We don't like to do what is right or what we ought to do for that is against our ‘grain'. It is always harder to climb uphill than to slide downhill. Dead fish flows along the river but live fish flows up and against the tide. The majority is not always right or powerful. Usually it is the minority or the remnant that is ultimately right and powerful. Moses plus God, defeated Pharaoh and the Egyptian army; Elijah plus God defeated Ahab and all the Baal worshippers; David in the Name of the Lord of hosts defeated Goliath and the Philistines. When we do right, we have God's stamp of authority and approval. Matthew 6:33 is true, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well”.

The apostle Paul in chapter 9 defended his right to receive financial support from the church in Corinth . He gave five reasons based on; his apostleship (1-6); human experience (7); the Old Testament Law (8-12); Old Testament practice (13) and the teaching of Jesus (14). Though he had the right, Paul refused support from them.

Many pastors today decline financial support from their churches. They want to stand blameless before the watching world and the Church. We need to emulate such examples so that more finance can be invested into winning the lost for Christ. The Gospel is free but the means to spread it far and wide requires us to give the best (e.g. Mary in John 12:1-8); give sacrificial (e.g. the lad in John 6:1-14) and give all (e.g. the widow in Luke 21:1-4). They truly “seek not their own but the good of others”. I am proud of some of you who responded in giving more than the actual cost when you bought the books and cd's of Mark Hemans. Some even took the initiative to sponsor others to camp. Let us always do what is beneficial to others, both within the household of God and the world with its increasing needs. May we, as a church, please God in doing right and fulfilling His purpose in our lives in ROLC.

June 11 Open Sunday

“Everything is possible for him who believes.” Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” (Mark 9:23-24). “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him” (Heb 11:6)

There are so many blessings that are unclaimed by both believers and unbelievers. No wonder the prophet Isaiah was astonished when he said, “Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” (Isa 53:1). God stretched out His arm to save and heal but do we dare to believe? We have believed in Christ for salvation but have we stopped short of believing Him for healing of our diseases (Isaiah 53). Make sure that we are not Christian skeptics. Like the father of the demonized boy may we confess, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief”!

How did we become born-again? By hearing and believing the Good News. Then, we confess with our mouth that, “Jesus is Lord” and believe in our hearts that God had raised Jesus from the dead” (Rom 10:9). We are “born-again” or “made alive spiritually” by our prayer of faith. So also, we need to be made “alive” by prayer.  Without prayer, we have no spiritual breath and that spells death.

Prayer and faith are the two sides of the same coin. As we pray in faith and with faith, we please God and “everything is possible for him who believes”. The recent Global Day of Prayer was awesome and it ought to spur us on to pray more. When the Church prays, God works. May we echo the prayer of the psalmist, Lord, “Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?” (Psalm 85:6). Yes, we need revival. When we are revived, we will truly be able to “rejoice” in God. The Church revived and rejoicing will have the greater strength to win souls for the Kingdom.

June 4 Exposition of 1 Corinthians Chapter 8

“Our Vision is to be a Christ-centered and Holy Spirit-filled community reaching out to the community by proclaiming Christ and bringing everyone to the fullness in Christ thus fulfilling God's purpose in our generation.” (Acts 1:8; Acts 13:36 & Colossians 1:28)

ROLC Church exists as a community within the local community to proclaim Christ and fulfill God's purpose in our generation through the power of the Holy Spirit. To proclaim Christ is to evangelize. When a church fails to evangelize, the church fossilizes. The Early Church sets the model for us. After a 10day prayer marathon, they received power from on High and signs, wonders and miracles followed them as a shadow follows a man. The Holy Spirit's power enabled Peter to preach a sermon and 3000 souls were saved in Acts 2. With the same power, another 5000 were saved in Acts 4. In Acts 3, Peter boldly declared, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk” (Acts 3:6). Today, most churches would say, “Silver or gold we do have” but they cannot say “in the name of Jesus Christ” walk. Today, we pray little so we have little power.

Unless Christ is proclaimed, souls cannot be won into the Kingdom. Soul winning is a corporate and progressive ministry. It requires team work with other believers to win and nurture new converts to maturity in Christ. Paul said, “ we proclaim Him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ” ( Col 1:28 ). Notice the plural word “we” in this verse. We “admonish and teach” like a father would discipline and nurture his children. As a family church, we must do what the early apostles did in order to experience the power of the Early Church . The church today is 2000 years behind the Early Church . We must repent and begin to experience what the Early Church had enjoyed.

We must be a “ High Impact Church ”. It's not the size that I am referring to but the passion in our hearts. We must feel the Heartbeat of our Father. We must reach the lost for Christ. We need to live for Christ (Phil 1:21 ). We need to be Christ-centered and Holy Spirit-filled to impact our community for Christ.

Let's begin to pray more than before. It is good to pray as a family once a week. Now, we will pray for 10 days beginning with 25th May and gather as ONE CHURCH at the National Stadium on 4 th June. Let's arise and join our brothers and sisters and as ONE BIG FAMILY, we assemble as ONE PEOPLE to pray with ONE ACCORD on this Global Day of Prayer for our nation and the world.

May 28 Men Who Encounter Jesus

“Our Vision is to be a Christ-centered and Holy Spirit-filled community reaching out to the community by proclaiming Christ and bringing everyone to the fullness in Christ thus fulfilling God's purpose in our generation.” (Acts 1:8; Acts 13:36 & Colossians 1:28)

Every Sunday for over three years, the above vision statement has been printed on our Sunday bulletin. How many of us read, memorize and meditate upon it? Let's look at the meaning and impact of this vision statement.

Our personal and corporate lives will make a deep influence and impact in our homes and community if we truly understand and practice our vision statement. I trust we will want to align ourselves to fulfill God’s Purpose in our generation, both for the Lord’s sake as well as for the generations to come. We are a people of destiny and we live not only for ourselves and own generations but for our children and children’s children till the Lord returns at His Second Coming.

Every club, company, church or country has its Vision/Purpose and all who are in that club, company, church or country must live in the Vision/Purpose and also live out the Vision/Purpose. Proverbs 29:18 says, “Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint” (NIV) or “Without a vision, the people perish” (KJV) or “When the people do not accept divine guidance, they run wild” (NLT).

ROLC is a “Christ-centered” Church. Christ is our Reason and Focus for our Existence and Continuity.  He is the Center in whom all our lives, ministries, aspiration and inspiration. Christ is “our life” and we allow Him to be pre-enimient in our actions, activities, attitudes as we yield to His Authority, Lordship and Control.

We are a “Holy Spirit-filled Community”. The Holy Spirit is in the Church, God’s Community. He is the Leader and Lord who indwells every believer. Jesus is the Lord of the Church and the Holy Spirit is Lord in the Church. When the Holy Spirit is loved and not grieved, we hear His whisper and we follow His prompting and leading in our corporate lives and ministries.

We are a “Community” reaching out to “the community”. Unless and until we are Christ-centered and Holy Spirit-filled”, we are not able to be God’s kind of Community to reach out to the community. In other words, the “ River of Life ” from the Throne of God (Rev 22:1) must flow into us before it can overflow to the thirsty hearts around us in the community. The mission to the community can only begin when the Lordship and Leadership of Christ and the Holy Spirit are in the center of our hearts, lives and service. (To be continued next week)

May 21 Children...Obey (Ephesians 6:1-4)

“Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. Honor you father and mother.” This is the first of the Ten Commandments that ends with a promise, And this is the promise: If you honor your father and mother you will live a long life, full of blessing.” You children must always obey your parents, for this is what pleases the Lord.
(Eph 6:1-3; Col 3:10. NLT).

Jesus sets the example for us at every level of relationships. In His relationship with His Father, He was fully submissive even to the point of death on the cross (Phil 2:5-11). In His relationship with His disciples, Jesus “showed the full extent of His love” (John 13:1) and in His relationship with His earthly parents, Jesus demonstrated obedience. (Luke 2:48-52).

While on earth, our Lord Jesus faced difficulties and temptations like any human being. Heb 4:15 says, “This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same temptations we do, yet he did not sin.” I am sure that there had been times when Jesus had opinions which were different from his earthly parents yet He was not rude. On one occasion when his earthly mother told him that “they have no more wine”, Jesus gently replied, “My time has not yet come” (John 2:3-4). The writer in Hebrews noted that “even though Jesus was God’s Son, he learned obedience from the things he suffered” (Heb 5:8).

When adults, especially parents model submission, love and obedience in the home before children, it will be easier for children to follow their examples of submission, love and obedience to authority in the schools, the church and the society. Let’s heed King Solomon’s advice: “teach your children to choose the right path and when they are old, they will remain upon it” (Pro 22:6 NLT).

The twofold commands for children to obey and honor parents is immediately followed by the command to parents, especially the fathers not to “make your children angry by the way you treat them” (Eph 6:4); “don’t aggravate your children” ( Col 3:21 ). Relationship is mutual. Each one is to focus on his or her role and responsibility and not on the other person’s. A child obeys and honors his parents as unto the Lord. Obedience is a matter of action and honor is a matter of attitude. Both action and attitude must be right and pleasing to the Lord. The role of the father is to nurture and bring the children up in the discipline and instruction approved by the Lord and not to provoke the children.

Let us as fathers take up this awesome responsibility an
