“For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people” (1 Tim 2:5-6a).
This verse contains some of the greatest truths of the Christian faith. First, it declares that there is one God. We don’t believe in many gods like some other religions. Second, there is only “one mediator between god and mankind”. Salvation is possible only by God’s grace and through faith in Jesus Christ who died for all mankind. Though the Jews believe in one God, they also believe that there are many mediators. They believe that angels were such mediators between God and men. Some other religions believe in many mediators and as a result, they worship millions of gods/idols. Paul emphatically declares that Jesus is the only mediator for all mankind. The Reformers had to fight wrong beliefs and practices and re-emphasized that it is through “Christ alone” that we have peace with God and access into God’s Presence (Romans 5:1-2). As the song says “In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song … My Comforter, my All in All, here in the love of Christ I stand. Christ has no rivals, no comparison. Christ alone is our Enough!
